During a school assembly and ceremony today (mon) at Bishop Filevich Ukrainian Bilingual School, a candle will be lit to mark the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor. Holodomor was the genocide of Ukrainian people that took place in the 1930’s under Stalin’s regime. On September 1st, the Ukrainian World Congress and other partners lit a remembrance flame. The first of September is typically the first day of school in Ukraine and the flame will be making an 85 day journey across the world to raise awareness and remember the millions of lives lost. Bishop Filevich is the first stop on the three day Saskatoon tour.
During the ceremony, the names of 85 children who died in the Holodomor will be read.
