Fond du Lac’s airport will soon be receiving over $12 million dollars worth of upgrades thanks to an investment by the federal government. The upgrades will include rehabilitation work to the airport’s runway along with the airfield lighting system among others. The community heavily relies on air travel for its transportation, being one of the province’s most northern and remote communities. Included in the investment is snow and de-icing equipment. It was in December of 2017, that a plane crashed shortly after taking off from Fond du Lac’s airport. An investigation determined the plane wasn’t properly de-iced. The crash killed 1 person and left 9 others seriously injured. Minister of Indigenous Services, Seamus O’Regan was in Saskatoon Thursday to make the announcement and says air travel to remote and northern communities isn’t just about business or pleasure but survival. He says communities like Fond du Lac depend on airports for the essentials. A total of $12,148,110 dollars is being invested by the federal government.
