Despite all the vehicles involved in the Thursday morning accident near Valley Road in Saskatoon, only one person went to hospital and the injuries were non-life threatening.
Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Rodger says this is the first time in his experience that he has seen a 14 vehicle accident on Circle Drive.
“The fact that, you know, this is a higher speed thoroughfare, you know, the potential for more vehicles to be involved, you know, is only to be expected.”
The City of Saskatoon says salt and magnesium chloride is less effective in colder temperatures which is what Saskatoon has been experiencing, consecutively, for weeks. So they often resort to using sand to create traction.
Acting Director of Roadways, Fleet and Support, Brodie Thompson says they have not been able to break up that ice.
“So, that presents a lot of challenges for us when you get new snowfall on top of the icy streets, that can make for some challenging driving conditions.”
Saskatoon Police say road conditions were a factor in the accident which took about three hours to clear. And if you were involved in the collision but could drive away from the pile up, police ask that you pop by the station and file a report.
