The new Saskatchewan Hospital North Battleford has officially opened, replacing the century-old psychiatric hospital and two correctional facilities for offenders with mental health issues.
The facility includes 188 psychiatric rehabilitation beds and a separate secure wing with 96 beds for offenders.
That increases what was available before by 32 beds.
All patients from the old building have been relocated and are settled in.
Health Minister Jim Reiter calls the new SHNB one of the most advanced mental health treatment centres in Canada.
The province handed over $407-million for the project, which includes construction and maintenance costs in a Public-Private Partnership agreement.
