Just before 1 Thursday afternoon, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a 9-1-1 call of a 54 -foot shipping container on fire in the yard of 2435 Schuyler Street in the city’s South West Industrial Park.
Information received from the caller identified the product inside the container was non-hazardous animal byproduct.
Once crews arrived, they found heavy smoke and significant flames exiting the container.
A nearby forklift was consumed by the flames and an adjacent building was immediately threatened.
Fire crews were able to bring the fire under control in 20 minutes and all of the occupants in the adjacent building had evacuated to muster points in the yard. One person was treated on scene for what are believed to be minor burns.
An investigator is working to determine a cause and a damage estimate.
