A new research project taking place in Prince Albert National Park is aimed at seeing how many bats and which types of bats call the park home and to keep them in their home.
Those taking part in the project hope to find the Little Brown bat which is considered endangered along with the possibility of finding up to five other bat species.
Cory Olsen, an ecologist from Sky Ecological who is working on the project along with Parks Canada resource management officers and a field reseacher says they’re using live capture and acoustic detection along with inspecting older buildings such as the Waskesiu Community Hall and the Superintendent’s residences to see what bats are in the park.
Information from the study will be used by the park to develop a species recovery action plan and to from environmental impact assessments.
If the researchers find bats are living in and around other buildings that they were unaware of, the park will take precautionary measures during any future maintenance to avoid disturbing the bats.
The team will also investigate tree knot holes and rock crevices, places were bats could be.
A full research report will be published in the spring of 2020.
