The group who developed a model for rural dementia care says their approach would be suitable for any interested community. The Rural Dementia Action Research Team facilitated Rural and Remote Memory Clinics in four southern Saskatchewan communities. The idea is to use local health care professionals for a team based look at dementia assessment and treatment plans. Team member Dr. Debra Morgan says local access is important for patients with the chronic ailment and its ever changing symptoms including confusion. She indicates familiar surroundings and interaction with local heath care professionals is beneficial for dementia sufferers who also avoid potentially disruptive travel to appointments. The model devised at the University of Saskatchewan is the basis for clinics in Weyburn, Kipling, Bengough and Radville.
