By early afternoon today (Fri), the Saskatoon Police Service had received over 30 complaints about a new phone scam where the fraudster claims the person has “violated federal laws” and demands the victim’s Social Insurance Number and postal code. It shows up as a 1-800 number.
Then, a short time after the first call, a second call comes in and the number on the call display is a ‘spoofed’ number for the Saskatoon Police Service. The caller impersonates an officer and again attempts to obtain personal information with the threat of an arrest.
Police advise the public to hang up and not follow the instructions. Instead report it to police. Anyone who has received similar phone calls is encouraged to file an online report with the police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Agency.
