The Gabriel Dumont Institute is celebrating 40 years in 2020 and the institution is marking the occasion by hosting a two-day conference with more than 475 dignitaries, delegates, Elders and students in attendance.
Earl Cook, Minister of Education with the Metis-Nation of Saskatchewan says an event is held every 10 years to mark another decade of the institution.
Cook says there’s more to celebrate at the 40th anniversary conference than the one 10 years ago marking 30 years.
“More success, more students coming through, like now we have over 1300, uh, teachers, a lot of apprentices, a lot of courses going on.”
The keynote speaker for the 40th celebration event is Maria Campbell. She is a filmmaker, playwright and writer that has published seven books including her book, Halfbreed that was published in 1973.
Around a dozen booths are set up at the event with a number of local artists selling their art and beadwork.
A number of sessions are scheduled for those in attendance over the next two days including an activity on beadwork along with a session on Metis embroidery.
