A new project from UR Pride, is giving trans and non binary people in Regina and Saskatoon the chance to tell their own stories, without being misrepresented.
That from photographer and digital storyteller Evie Ruddy (They/Them) in the wake of a 2019 photography project that missed the mark for the people involved.
Ruddy set out to work with trans and non-binary people in Saskatchewan and had 8 participants, that they were able to help tell their own stories, in their own words, using their own voices to create visual representations of themselves.
Ruddy explains the project was put together to challenge the power relations between subject and photographer.
Ruddy says it was very important to have a trans or non-binary photographer participate for the shared lived experience with the participants and the understanding of the harm that could be caused by non-trans photographers, working with trans and non-binary people.
The project is available in person in Regina or online at storiesthatmove.ca
