Businessman Mark Zielke says if he is voted in as Saskatoon’s next mayor he will be looking at all of the city’s departments to find savings because he feels expenses have ballooned.
Zielke told reporters that crime and addictions challenges are rising and topping up the police budget didn’t help, so he wants to check for savings there as well. He doesn’t agree with promising to lower property taxes though, like some candidates have suggested, saying you can’t promise something until you’ve seen the numbers. Zielke also wants to move the Lighthouse out of the downtown core, even though much of its funding comes from the province.
The mayoral candidate calls himself an advocate for justice, but a judge ordered him to stop doing legal work and accepting a fee without a licence from the Law Society of Saskatchewan last year.
Zielke says he continues to be an advocate and is appealing the decision.
