The Metis Nation flag was raised simultaneously in front of RCMP Headquarters in Regina and the Saskatoon RCMP building today (Mon) for Louis Riel Day.
Saskatchewan RCMP Acting Commanding Officer, Alfredo Bangloy says even though the day recognizes Louis Riel’s death, he chooses to honour his life, because Riel was dedicated to ensuring the continuation of the Metis people.
By raising the flag on Saskatchewan Louis Riel Day, the RCMP wish to recognize the existence of the Metis as a nation, the existence of Metis Nation-Saskatchewan as a government and to celebrate the future of the Metis Nation.
MN-S President Glen McCallum says, “Riel believed he acted honestly and that the time would come when the people of Canada will see and acknowledge that. The heroic stand Riel and his people took in Batoche for recognition, self-determination and self-governance is still alive and well today.”
