The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is calling on the federal government to drop its appeal against a federal court decision upholding a Canadian Human Rights Tribunal order that requires Ottawa to pay First Nations children who were removed from their homes. FSIN Chief Bobby Cameron says “Our First Nations children are our most vital and valuable resource. This federal government has taken them from their homes and communities and then dragged them through years of litigation and court. Enough is enough.” Assembly of First Nations Chief RoseAnne Archibald tweeted out Friday saying that “While we are disappointed that Canada continues to pursue an appeal, we are encouraged that a deadline will be set to negotiate a settlement of this matter.” Minister of Indigenous Services, Patty Hajdu said in a statement that Ottawa and the Indigenous groups involved have agreed to reach a resolution by December. The federal government is appealing a CHRT ruling that requires Ottawa to pay up to $40 thousand dollars to each First Nations child unnecessarily removed from their home and taken into foster care since 2006.
