When you think of people fleeing Afghanistan because they are in danger of being targeted by the Taliban, environmentalists may not come to mind, but that’s the case for a group of refugees and their families who have fled to Pakistan. Climate Justice Saskatoon is hoping to raise $35,000 to bring a family to Canada.
Spokesperson David Sanscartier says these refugees have been involved in climate and women’s rights organizing in their home country. Normally the local group’s focus would be on preventing or mitigating the worst impacts of climate change, but after hearing about these refugees through Greta Thunberg’s Fridays for Future organization, Sanscartier says they wanted to help get them to safety. There is urgency to the call for action, because the refugees are in the final weeks of a 60 day visa.
