Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement this morning (sat) to mark the sixth anniversary of the deadly shootings in La Loche.
Six years ago today, the community of La Loche suffered an attack that killed four people and seriously injured seven others.
Trudeau says “On this sombre anniversary, I join the people of Saskatchewan and all Canadians to remember and pay tribute to the innocent lives that were lost.”
The Prime Minister added that “We owe it to all the victims and survivors of gun violence in Canada and their families.” In 2020, the federal government announced a ban of more than 1,500 models of assault-style firearms.
In 2021, it was announced that Ottawa will invest almost $600 million dollars over three years for distinctions-based approaches to mental wellness for First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples.
Trudeau says the strategy will continue to increase access to and strengthen mental wellness in Indigenous communities across the country.
Premier Scott Moe and NDP Leader Ryan Meili also tweeted out their condolences on the anniversary.
Six years ago today, La Loche was shaken by a terrible tragedy and four lives were taken far too soon.
Today we remember and reflect on the lives lost, those who were physically and emotionally wounded, and the healing that has taken place and will continue to take place.

Last week we met with staff at Dene High School and learned of the plans for remembrance and the incredible resilience of the La Loche community.#DeneStrong pic.twitter.com/4VkHKjXONQ
