A staple in Saskatoon’s Riversdale neighbourhood could potentially become designated as a heritage building. The City’s planning, development and community services committee heard from those with the Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee on Monday.
The heritage committee shared their thoughts and concerns about the building and its future as it’s currently on the market seeking a new owner. Current owner, Tom Hutchinson who operates Magic Lantern and Rainbow Cinemas has stated he intends to find an owner that is interested in the theatre itself rather than the property.
A motion pitched by Councillor Hilary Gough during the meeting on Monday was passed unanimously. Her motion will see City staff speak with the property owner and report back to the committee on options for designation along with what civic supports may be needed to support the preservation of the Roxy.
The theatre which opened in 1930 is currently placed on the City’s holding bylaw, meaning that if the City receives a demolition permit for the building, they would have a period of 60 days to prevent it from happening.
There was no timeframe stated for when administration would report back.
The asking price for the 92 year-old theatre is $995,000.
