Domestic poultry producers are on guard once again for highly pathogenic avian influenza.
It was carried by wild migratory birds flying from the United States to Canada this spring. Now that those birds are heading south for the winter, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has confirmed Avian Flu in a commercial flock in the R.M. of Laird, about 65 kilometres north of Saskatoon.
There was an influx of highly pathogenic avian influenza across the country this spring, including seven cases in commercial flocks and seven in backyard flocks in Saskatchewan. The last confirmed case in our province was on May 25th.
The Chief Veterinary Officer with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Stephanie Smith says poultry owners should attempt to keep their birds inside if possible
