What is next for the Legends Centre Arena in Warman and whether there will be an expansion to include a second arena remains up in the air. Mayor Gary Philipchuk explains that the City has applied for federal and provincial funding through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure program every year for the last four years to no avail. This year was the final intake for this program. Philipchuk states that there was very little government funding provided for the original facility, so they hoped it would be a good fit for the expansion, which would include a second arena attached to the Legends Centre and a second level on the addition where people could see both arenas.
Late this summer, the City of Warman announced that options were being considered for what happens next, whether it’s going ahead with the expansion and finding other ways to fund it, or building a smaller addition, or holding off for a future funding opportunity. Philipchuk explains that one of the many options would be an approximately $194 levy per household to build the expansion in its original form. However, he adds that even if they build a smaller structure, the way costs have risen, it could still end up costing more. Warman’s Mayor says they are looking at all the possibilities and a report to City Council is expected before budget deliberations begin later this year.
