In Saskatoon, The Rock Your Roots Walk which would normally be on Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21st, but was cancelled this year because of the weather, is now being held on Friday, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. It begins at 10 at Central Urban Metis Federation Inc and ends in Victoria Park, across the road from Spadina Crescent West.

The City of Saskatoon has free Indigenous activities for the public on during the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. They include hoop dancing, Metis jigging and storytelling at Cosmo Civic Centre from 1 to 4 p.m. In a news release, the City points out that this is part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. Number 66 is about youth programming and number 89 is about creating health and well-being opportunities by reducing barriers to sports participation. More information on the events can be found by clicking here.
In Prince Albert, one of the day’s activities is a community barbeque. It will be from 11 am to 1pm on the riverbank near the Sisters in Spirit Monument. Because it’s also Orange Shirt Day, the City of Prince Albert is inviting one to wear orange to honour Residential School Survivors. There were four Residential schools in Prince Albert. A news release from the City of Prince Albert says the first one opened in 1879 and the last one closed in 1997. “Around the country, unmarked graves at residential schools have raised awareness about the conditions at Residential schools and their impacts on survivors.”
Lieutenant Governor Russ Mirasty is hosting a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event at Government House on Thursday. After Lieutenant Governor Mirasty welcomes everyone there will be a blessing from an Elder, and then a special performance from Brad Bellegard of hip hop music and storytelling.
