A male has died in a fire in one of the suites at the Thrift Lodge in the 1800 block of Idylwyld Drive North. Emergency crews responded just before 6 in the morning and found smoke and flames coming from one of the suites, and when they entered, the man was found dead inside. All of the suites were searched to ensure everyone had gotten out and the fire hadn’t spread.

The fire originated on a desk, and a Fire Investigator has concluded the cause was accidental, from improper disposal of smoking material. The damage is estimated at $30,000. The Fire Department also notes the motel room was missing its smoke alarm so the motel’s smoke alarm records have been requested. Police say the death is not considered suspicious.
