CALGARY — After leading the Dinos to a new conference record while accumulating 50 points atop the CW standings, three Calgary players are adding another accolade to the 2022-23 the season.

Carl Tetachuk, Noah King, and Riley Stotts have been named Canada West first-team all-stars, the stars of the story that has captivated the conference this year. They led the Dinos in smashing pre-season expectations and making history for the longest win streak in the league’s record books. CW’s top two scorers in Riley Sawchuk and Nolan Yaremko (both from Mount Royal) round out the first-team all-star forward line while the conference’s highest-scoring D-man, Saskatchewan’s Connor Hobbs, earns the final spot on that roster.

The second-team all-star squad is dominated by the Alberta Golden Bears, who finished second this season and have earned a first-round playoff bye. Ethan Kruger led the league in goals-against-average, while his teammates Dawson Davidson and Josh Prokop played integral roles in the Bears’ success. Regina defenceman Tyler Heidt makes his first appearance on a CW all-star team after helping the Cougars secure the final playoff spot.

Saskatchewan adds a second selection in Jared Dmytriw, who helped the Huskies come out hot and maintain their postseason position. Despite finding himself outside the playoff picture looking in, Manitoba’s Brett Davis rounds out the second team thanks to his outstanding efforts this season. The balanced scorer/playmaker averaged 1.26 points per game.

Tetachuk gets a second nod on the all-rookie team, where he’s joined by a pair of UBC Thunderbirds. Sasha Mutala and Jake Lee are making the T-Birds’ future look bright. Mount Royal also earns a couple nods in Michael Ladyman and Connor Bouchard, the latter of whom finished third in the conference in points after making the Cougars’ top line the most dangerous in Canada West. Jakin Smallwood of Alberta also earns a spot on the team after posting 35 points in 26 games this season.

WHL GRADS

Of the 17 players named to Canada West men’s hockey All-Star and All-Rookie teams, 16 are WHL Alumni with 15 of the 16 players accessing their WHL Scholarship.

During the 2022-23 academic year, WHL Clubs have invested over $2 million to deliver nearly 350 WHL Scholarships, with nearly 150 going to student athletes attending Canada West institutions and competing at the U SPORTS level in the Canada West men’s hockey league. In many cases, these student athletes have combined their WHL Scholarship with additional financial assistance from Canada West universities to receive the Western Canada Premier Hockey Scholarship.

The league’s second-leading point-getter, Bassi has been instrumental in the T-Birds’ terrifying offence that has scored 21 more goals than any other team in 2022-23. Koroll, meanwhile, led CW’s top defensive core while also posting 20 points in 28 games.

Rounding out the first-team all-stars are Emma Bergesen of Mount Royal, Alli Borrow of Calgary and Halle Oswald of Alberta. Bergesen was the conference’s highest scoring defender this year, while Borrow topped the league in goals. Oswald had a record-setting year of her own, taking over first place in career goals-against-average with an astounding 1.107 in her 61 games.

Her provincial rival in Gabrielle Durante (Calgary) earns a second-team all-star nod. Durante posted an incredible seven shutouts this season. UBC’s Rylind MacKinnon and Alberta’s Taylor Anker are the second-team defence selections, a shutdown duo who have frustrated elite offences this season. Courtney Kollman (Mount Royal), Amy Potomak (Trinity Western) and Madison Willan (Alberta) complete the line-up. Kollman sits tied for third in points with 26, while Willan’s balanced scoring and playmaking abilities helped her Pandas to a first-round playoff bye. Potomak posted 24 points in 27 games this season to lead Trinity Western to its first-ever CW playoff berth. She makes history as the program’s first-ever Canada West women’s hockey all-star.

Manitoba’s sole selection comes on the all-rookie team. Emily Shippam battled hard in the net for a squad that missed the playoffs this year, but shows hope for her Bisons moving into 2022-23. Calgary duo Keagan Goulet and Sydney Mercier are also making waves in their first CW season. Mercier led all rookies in scoring while Goulet has showed herself as an invaluable building block for the Dinos’ defence. Alberta’s Sara Kazeil is the other all-rookie defender, playing a big role in a squad that was second-best at keeping pucks out of nets this season.

UBC’s Cassidy Rhodes and Saskatchewan’s Taylor Wilkinson have also established themselves as central pieces to their teams’ puzzles in just their first year. The two round out the all-rookie team.
