The manufacturer of the new green compost carts will begin delivering the bins to Saskatoon residents today.
By The end of April, over 60,000 carts will be delivered to Saskatoon homes in time for bi-weekly collection beginning in May.
Katie Burns, the City of Saskatoon Education and Environmental Performance Manager for Climate Change says the new third-party processor, Green Prairie Environmental, composts hotter and faster than the previous facility was capable of doing.
It is also the reason that animal biproducts are now allowed to be disposed of in the bins. As well you can now use BPI-certified compostable or paper liners. You can also use a 100 per cent paper liner to reduce moisture and odour.

She adds that she and her team are also working on a system for people who live in condos and apartments to use, and she expects a pilot project sometime this year and a program put in place withing the next several years.
In addition, Burns says the end product will still be available for Saskatoon residents to use in their yards and gardens and will be available free of charge from the West Compost Depot which is located near Highway 7 and 11th Street.
Green bins can be used as soon as they are delivered however actual pick up does not begin until May.
