Two Edmonton Police officers were shot and killed while answering a domestic dispute call at an apartment building in the city’s Inglewood neighbourhood early Thursday morning.
At a news conference Thursday Edmonton Police Chief Dale McFee identified the members as 35-year-old Constable Travis Jordan and 30-year-old Constable Brett Ryan. Jordan had served with Edmonton Police Service for eight-and-a-half years, and Ryan five-and-a-half years.
He says upon arrival the two patrol members went inside the building located at 114 Avenue and 132 Street, approached the suite, and were shot by a male subject.
“The two members were rushed to the hospital by our own members who worked valiantly to save their lives en route. Unfortunately, they were both declared deceased at the hospital. The young male subject is also deceased, believed to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.”
There is also a female who McFee says was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and is in serious but stable condition. Chief McFee says at this time all indications are the two officers did not have a chance to discharge their firearms.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his condolences to the officers’ loved ones and colleagues on social media saying that two Edmonton police officers being killed in the line of duty is a reminder that every day, police officers put themselves in harm’s way to keep people safe.
