The City of Saskatoon says coyote sightings have occurred at various locations throughout Saskatoon and they’re warning people to keep their distance pointing out that all wildlife can be unpredictable when confronted.
They suggest that while you want to act assertive by waving your hands and yelling, you also need to make sure the animal has an escape route. As well keep your pets on a leash.
There are things you can do to make it less desirable for coyotes like never feed them or leave food waste where it would be accessible. Don’t feed pets outdoors, make sure your yard is closed and seal off access to decks or sheltered spaces in your yard.
At a local veterinary clinic, it said the two coyotes who were euthanized in Saskatoon recently were both positive for Canine Distemper. The Acadia Veterinary Clinic posted on March 31st to social media to provide a warning to local dog owners. The clinic says distemper can be fatal in up to 50% of unvaccinated dogs and those that survive, often have permanent neurological damage.
Earlier in March there were three sightings on the same day of coyotes acting strangely. One in Aspen Ridge and the other in Sutherland Dog Park. In two instances police were called. Officers confirmed the animals were in distress and euthanized them. In the third instance, it was also a coyote acting strangely but it fled.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding coyotes or other wildlife within City limits, please contact Urban Biological Services at 306-975-3300. If an emergency occurs, please contact Saskatoon Police Service at 306-975-8300.
The City of Saskatoon says coyotes are an important component of a balanced ecosystem but rapid expansion of the city and creating larger green spaces has resulted in more wildlife sightings.
