Over the weekend, an international travelling art installation showed up in Saskatoon. The RedBall Project will be on display at various locations across the city until July 1st, where it will be on the Traffic Bridge in time for the Canada Day celebrations. The project’s artist, Kurt Perschke says the inflatable ball, which is 15 feet in diametre, has already been to 39 cities around the world since its creation in 2001. These include London, California, and Sydney, and five cities in France including Paris.
He says he chose the colour red for the ball, because it plays on humour, a sense of surprise, and because red is a great expression of energy. Throughout the week, the ball will make appearances at Roxy Theatre, the Saskatoon School Board Office Downtown, the Prairie Lily Boat Launch, and the Delta Bessborough Hotel.
RedBall Saskatoon was commissioned by the Placemaker Program, a program managed by the City of Saskatoon with a purpose of adding significance to civic spaces through temporary art. Today (Tues) 20th Street will be closed between Avenue C and Avenue D at 9:30 a.m. for the Riversdale Red Ball Project event. Detours will be in place and the event is expected to take nine hours to complete.
