Saskatoon’s Terry Fox Run takes place Sunday taking participants along the city’s river.
The run kicks off with a short opening ceremony in the back of the Bessborough. Due to some construction, the route will not begin out of the back of the Bessborough, it will re-route up the side of the Bess, and down to the Meewasin Skating Rink. Runners will be guided down Meewasin Trail, with markers and marshals letting them know when to turn around. There are 2.5km, 5km, and 10km run options.
Terry Fox, a young Canadian who lost his leg to Osteosarcoma, ran across Canada in an attempt to raise money for cancer research. After 143 days of running, he was forced to stop, as the cancer had spread to his lungs.
In his honour, all proceeds received during the annual Terry Fox Run event will support cancer research done by only the top five per cent of Canadian cancer researchers. The Saskatoon Terry Fox Committee’s goal was to raise $26,000 this year, which has already been surpassed.
