This past March, a group of Saskatchewan citizens concerned about the environment filed a court case asking the court to consider whether there is a violation of Charter rights to life, liberty and personal security when SaskPower builds new gas generation plants, in light of climate change. The court order asks for the Crown Corporation to develop a realistic plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2035.
A year later, on April 5th of 2024, there will be a special hearing to consider whether the case should go ahead. The organization called Sustainable Saskatchewan says on its website that the government has asked for a dismissal of the lawsuit. Both the government and SaskPower made applications to strike the case. It’s anticipated their court materials will be served by February 5th and the group’s response for court will be ready by March 5th.
