A big blow for supporters of Bill C-234—the legislation that would have exempted the carbon tax from natural gas and propane used to dry grain, as well as heat and cool livestock barns.
Late Tuesday afternoon, the Senate voted in favor of an amendment introduced by Quebec Senator Pierre Dalphond to remove barns from the legislation, only leaving grain drying. The vote was extremely close and passed by a margin of 40-39. Parliament had earlier passed the bill garnering votes from Opposition MP’s, including the NDP.
Bill C-234 supporter Senator David Wells says the bill is “gutted” and will likely return to Parliament for more debate. The Senate’s next session is on Thursday.
