With many industries experiencing labour shortages, a Saskatoon company recommends hiring those who are new to the country. Brennen Mills, a partner with Saskatoon Fire and Flood, which is a restoration and construction company, estimates about 22 per cent of their employees are immigrants and he says they are amazing people.
Mills realizes there may be some language barriers but says it can all be worked out. He says, “They want to make a difference. They want to participate. They are proud of their work, as are we.”
The advice from Mills for other businesses wondering if they should look into hiring and supporting new immigrants is that it takes time, but it’s worth it.
Start slow and expand from there. Mills believes that everyone, when given the proper tools to succeed, such as education and opportunity, can attain new skills and become valued members of an organization.
This past fall, the provincial government expanded the options under the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program for certain work permit holders in intermediate and lower-skilled jobs to apply for permanent residency.
