Since 1974, Sask Lotteries has been helping to fund amateur sport, culture and recreation in this province.
In those 50 years, lottery sales have been used to provide more than $1.4 billion in support.
A news release from Sask Lotteries explains that the funding comes from a long-standing agreement with the provincial government to direct proceeds from lotteries to sport, culture and recreation organizations.
In the past 50 years, some of the funding has gone to 196 athletes who attended the Olympic and Paralympic Games and over 1.6 million participants benefited from opportunities for cultural activities.
The story of how Sask Lotteries began: The volunteer-led organization Sask Sport wanted to run a lottery, but to be granted a lottery licence, two of the founding volunteers, Cas Pielak and Joe Kanuka, agreed to sign a promissory note to help start a lottery fundraising program.
It was successful and eventually led to the Western Canada Lottery Corporation being established.
In 1974, the funds were placed into the Sask Lotteries Trust Fund, and then from there they are used to help sport, culture and recreation groups as designated by the Government of Saskatchewan.
