If you want to learn more about what the Nature Conservancy of Canada is doing in Saskatchewan, you can ask them yourselves tonight (Tues) at the Frances Morrison Library at 7. This is part of the Saskatchewan Environmental Society’s Sustainability Speakers Series hosted by the Saskatoon Public Library.
NCC Saskatchewan spokesperson, Sarah Bradley, says one of their projects is the Prairie Grasslands Action Plan, with the goal of conserving more than 500,000 hectares by 2030 across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. She explains, “Grasslands are one of the most threatened and least protected biomes globally, and especially in Canada. It is estimated that less than 20 per cent of our original grasslands are left intact.”
Since 1962 across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, NCC has protected 300,000 hectares of prairie. Bradley says grasslands absorb and store billions of tonnes of carbon, provide protection from flooding and drought, help purify our water and are home to at-risk species.
