You should see snow ploughs in Saskatoon residential neighbourhoods starting on Wednesday night which is 24 hours ahead of schedule. Director of Roadways Goran Saric says as of Tuesday morning in Saskatoon crews have finished grading Priority 1 streets, Priority 2 streets are 75 per cent complete, and priority 3 streets are 40 per cent complete. All priority streets will be completed by Wednesday midnight.
He says they were able to accelerate their progress due to pieces of equipment becoming available. Once they move into residential neighborhoods they will also address ramping hazards on some of the bridges where snow has been pushed against the concrete barrier and railing.
Pamela Goulden Mcleod Director of Emergency Management Organization says things are starting to get back to normal. She did have a few safety messages though. She said the Saskatchewan Health Authority is reminding residents to be careful. There is significant amount of snow, and it puts a strain on both your back and your heart.
When shoveling she asks residents to try to clear away from fire hydrants. She urges city residents to not climb snow piles nor create tunnels. The weight of that snow can be very dangerous. Goulden-Mcleod says another serious concern is snow blocking intake pipes and exhaust vents. A plugged exhaust can result in carbon monoxide being pushed back into your home and can also cause your furnace to shut down.
Curbside collection of waste is going ahead today. Black, green and blue cart collections from Monday are now scheduled to Saturday. Those with back lane pick up are expected to see collection on their routes today as the City had trucks out Monday doing some pre-packing of back lanes yesterday to ensure today’s collection could move ahead.
