You could call it a ‘coming home’ of sorts.
The Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra is presenting ‘Sask Celebration’ on Saturday night.
The guest conductor and guest artists are from Saskatoon, either originally, or at some point in their life journeys.
It begins with guest conductor William Rowson.
He was born and raised in Saskatoon and his parents live here.
Rowson conducts the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and works with Guelph’s symphony as well as others throughout Canada.
He says there are lots of Saskatchewan artists working across the country, so it’s great to come back to their collective hometown and perform together.
The first piece of the night is the world premiere of Suite for the Prairies by Saskatoon-born, Grammy-nominated composer Andrew Kesler.
It’s also a chance for the Saskatoon Youth Orchestra to perform along with the SSO on this piece.
That’s followed by a concerto from violinist Veronique Mathieu who has performed all over the world and now calls Saskatoon home.
The night closes with piano superstar Godwin Friesen, who spent his formative years in the city.
He is performing Prokofiev’s 3rd Piano Concerto which earned him top prize at Canada’s most prestigious competition, the OSM Competition in 2022.
Tickets are available through the TCU Place box office or online.
