A play about acceptance, being yourself, and navigating the world of social media is coming to a park near you.
As part of Season 12 of Sum Theatre’s Theatre in the Park, the cast and crew are putting on a play called The Reel Whirled.
Actress Megan Zong says the play is a 90s themed rock-pop musical, complete with original songs, giant puppets and some opportunities for audience participation.
“It dives deep into the internet, and three friends who try to win the attention of Gigi 5G who is a famous influencer. The show is about connection, acceptance, life online and offline and how we can balance that.”
Zong says the moral of the story is ‘it’s okay to be yourself’, as many people use the internet to create a facade and hide who they are.
“We’re not saying it (the internet) is a bad thing. It’s about finding the balance between being online but not being stuck online and still being able to enjoy the world outside the digital world.”
The free show runs almost every day until June 28th. Sum Theatre will be performing the play in Saskatoon, Regina, and several northern communities such as La Ronge and Prince Albert.
