- Saskatchewan Legislature Speaker Randy Weekes has resigned from the Sask. Party government caucus. He posted a statement both to Facebook and X, formerly Twitter.
In the online statement, Weekes says he “half expected” Premier Scott Moe to remove him from caucus, but since he didn’t, he decided to make it official by submitting a resignation letter.
Weekes says he will continue to serve as Speaker and as an Independent member of the legislature for Biggar-Sask Valley for the remainder of his term. In December Weekes lost the Sask. Party nomination for the new Kindersley-Biggar constituency in advance of the upcoming provincial election. He also cut up his official membership card just over a month ago and posted a photo of it to social media.
Weekes has leveled accusations at cabinet minister Jeremy Harrison of taking a gun to the legislature, wanting to carry a handgun and sending texts that harassed the speaker during Question Period.
Harrison stepped down as Government House Leader after the matter over taking a gun in the legislature came to light.
