The Saskatoon Fire Department and its Hazmat team responded to a report of a chemical leak just before 10:30 this morning (Tues) at City Hospital. A news release from the Fire Department says crews were met by hospital staff who directed tem to the chemical spill in a non-ventilated room. The area was isolated and people were directed to their muster points.
The Hazmat team says the substance was Rapicide, which is a hospital grade disinfectant. It was leaking from a machine, so the machine was turned off and the leaked disinfectant was cleaned up and ventilated. The contaminated materials were placed in a container and transferred outside for further disposal.
The Fire Department says four individuals were exposed and as a precaution, they were assessed by firefighter paramedics. No injuries or illness were detected. City Hospital’s emergency room remains open.
