An estimated 50,000 people are expected to come together this weekend for the annual Back to Batoche gathering.

Each year, Indigenous and non-Indigenous people alike gather to dance, sing, and share Métis culture.

This year’s festival began with the Grand Entry featuring Elders, Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan Russ Mirasty, First Nations Chiefs and Vice Chiefs, and welcoming remarks from Métis Nation–Saskatchewan President Glen McCallum.

A Memorandum of Understanding was renewed between Parks Canada and MN–S during the opening ceremony, which solidifies their commitment to work towards co-management of Batoche National Historic Site.

In addition, 2024 is the year that both the bison and Dumont Lodge are at Batoche, and for the first time in Batoche history, the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association and the North West Saskatchewan Pony Chuckwagon and Chariot Association and Indian Relay racers join the traditional horse and wagon races.

The festival site has seen several improvements since last year, including new bathrooms and showers, more electrified camping, an overhaul at the racetrack,
and walkway repairs.

All of the work that goes into making the festival a success was done by Métis contractors and tradespeople.
