Since 2005, communities across Canada have been taking part in Point-in-Time Homeless Counts to get a snapshot of the problem on a national level. Between October 1st and November 30th, trained volunteers in 58 Canadian cities, including Saskatoon, will be visiting shelters, transitional housing, encampments and detox centers and record the minimum number of people impacted by homelessness. Results will determine which demographics are experiencing the highest levels of homelessness, as well as highlight the need for increased government investment to target the issue.
According to a count done in 2022, Saskatoon had 550 homeless people, 90 per cent of whom were Indigenous. In order to successfully complete the one-day survey, volunteers are needed to fill a variety of roles in several cities across the province. In Saskatoon, 250 volunteers are required.
