Update: Organizers of Saskatoon’s Terry Fox run posted on social media that participants have blown away their wildest fundraising expectations. There were 330 participants in this year’s Terry Fox run and 44 volunteers with $47,548 raised for cancer research. They say it is the highest Saskatoon run-day fundraising total in at least a decade.
–Original Story–
In 1980, Canadian icon Terry Fox began his trek across Canada to raise money for cancer research. On Sunday, Canadians cans follow in his footsteps by taking part in the 44th Annual Terry Fox Run happening in communities across the country.
Organizer of the Saskatoon run, Anthony Wood, says people of all ages and abilities are welcome to join the event and participate at their own pace. People can walk, run, bike, or even rollerblade on 1,3,5 and 10 kilometres routes.
“It’s something that’s super casual. A great way to bring the community together. Don’t overthink it. Whether you’re donating $2, $50, $100, it’s all about getting the community out there. Getting a show of support and getting visibility out there.”
Wood says last year, the event gathered 255 participants, and $37,000 was raised. He adds that the run is focused on showing support, and any donation will make a difference, no matter what size.
All funds go toward supporting cancer research. Over the last four decades, runs like this have raised over $900 million for the cause. You can register for the run, volunteer, and pledge donations at terryfox.org.
The run will begin at the Delta Bessborough Gardens. Registration begins at 11:00, with the run commencing at noon tomorrow.
