The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team will investigate the death of Joey Desjarlais.
RCMP received reports Tuesday that Desjarlais, who was wanted for a series of robberies in east central Saskatchewan this month in Wadena, Melfort and Yorkton, was in the Fishing Lake area.
Multiple RCMP units began searching for him and around 1 p.m. officers attempted a traffic stop on a speeding van, but the vehicle didn’t pull over. It was shortly after that RCMP received a report that a van had been stolen from a school on Fishing Lake First Nation and they determined it was the same van from the earlier interaction with police.
RCMP officers pursued the van through roads in rural areas and around 1:45 p.m. it entered a field at which time officers shot at the vehicle, but the van continued travelling. In a news release RCMP say, “The van came to a stop and additional shots were discharged. The sole occupant was located inside, injured. He was declared deceased by EMS at the Scene.”
It was Joseph “Joey” Desjarlais inside and RCMP say his family has been notified.
