Persephone Theatre’s next production is a musical about women who went undercover in Nazi-occupied France in World War II, carrying out covert missions against the Germans. Catalyst Theatre, based out of Edmonton, is bringing The Invisible: Agents of Ungentlemanly Warfare to Saskatoon with the first of two preview nights tomorrow night (Wed).
Jonathan Christenson wrote and composed the musical and he is directing it at Persephone Theatre through November 3rd. He says Catalyst Theatre doesn’t take on the lighter subjects. They are interested in engaging with the meatier subjects, but in a way that is compelling, entertaining and ultimately inspiring for audiences. This production is inspired by the approximately 40 women who became spies behind enemy lines. He says, “They fly in the face of conventional wisdom around women playing a supportive role by taking on jobs in the factories back home while the men fought on the front line. These women in face were fighting on the front line.” Their stories remained classified until the 1990s, so Christenson says it’s time their stories were told.
Previous to this musical, Catalyst Theatre has presented a production about Edgar Allen Poe and another about Frankenstein at Persephone Theatre. Tickets are available through the Persephone Theatre box office online and at the theatre.
