There has been no statement issued yet from the Saskatchewan Party regarding a ruling by the Conflict-of-Interest Commissioner of Saskatchewan which deemed that a former Sask. Party MLA breached legislation.
In his 17 page ruling, Commissioner Maurice Herauf said Gary Grewal breached conflict-of-interest legislation when the Sunrise Motel and Thriftlodge Motel entered contracts with the social services ministry. The province has spent $732,000 on Grewal’s hotels since 2018 for social services recipients.
In the case of the Sunrise Motel the ruling says a Social Services representative would call the motel directly, negotiate a price for the duration of the stay, deliver the client and remit payment. For the Thriftlodge Motel Grewal provided $100,000 in the form of a loan. The report says Grewal was told in December 2023 his companies should stop taking part in the contracts, but he did not. The NDP has accused Grewal in the past of increasing the motel rates when charging government clients.
