The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team has been notified after a male went into medical distress while in custody in Fort Qu’Appelle. Around 3 Wednesday afternoon Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP received a report about someone disturbing the peace and when they arrived, they found a male with what appeared to be a minor injury. He was exhibiting signs of intoxication so for his safety he was arrested for breach of peace and taken into custody to be released when it was safe to do so. He was monitored by cell guards throughout the night.
The next morning at 7, an officer tried to wake him to assess him for release and realized he was experiencing a medical event, so EMS was called. Later the detachment was notified the male was in serious condition. As required by The Police Act, the Serous Incident Response Team was notified, and they will investigate the police interactions with the injured person and the circumstances of his injuries. Separately, the RCMP will conduct an investigation into whether any injury led to the male’s current medical state, and if any criminality contributed to it.
