When I’m asked what my favourite sport is I ask to watch or to have played? I played a number of sports when I was young, football, hockey, curling, soccer. I didn’t play much baseball or basketball or volleyball but hey, it’s tough to do everything. What do I like to watch today? Well, my favourite to go watch in person would be hockey and to watch on TV it would be football. Someone who knows my hometown is Winnipeg asked me if I wanted to go there and see the Riders play the Bombers this weekend and I said no, I’d rather watch the game in my man cave with a snack in hand and the fireplace on. Not that I don’t enjoy going to Mosaic to see Rider games but let’s face it, television coverage of football has become pretty sophisticated (even though there are too many commercial breaks for my liking….and I shouldn’t say that because I’ve made my living from commercials… on radio). I shouldn’t say this either, but while I wear green and say, “Go Riders!” there’s still a small piece of my heart with Winnipeg where when a small boy, two cousins on my mom’s side played for the Bombers. When I lived in B.C. I stayed a Bomber fan. Then I lived in Alberta for eight years but remained a Bomber fan. Then I moved to Saskatoon in 1983 and soon became and stayed a Roughrider fan. On Saturday I will be cheering on the Riders. Only if the football gods are against us and we lose the game then I’ll cheer for the Bombers in their fifth consecutive Grey Cup appearance. Hopefully though it will be the boys in green, not blue, heading to BC Place Stadium in Vancouver November 17.
