It’s my Parting Shot for my reactions to the headlines in today’s Star-Phoenix Sports Section…..
First headline…Montembeault, defence finding a groove for Habs, Goaltender rebounds from rough month with 30 shot shutout against Edmonton. My reaction…so, the one night I want the Oilers to win a game – and they soil the sheets! C’mon man! I ask McSaviour and his merry band of City of Champions misfits to do one thing for me that I would appreciate, beat the hated Habs, and you lose by shutout?!!! Oh well, I guess when you’re the Canadiens and their crazy fan base and you’re told that you’ve got the best group of up-and-coming young players than any other team and that patience is required, I guess any little success is good! For me, just stay out of the playoffs again!!
Next headline…No N-F-L coach doing a better job than the Steelers’ Tomlin. Reaction…I might disagree and go with Kevin O’Connell with my Minnesota Vikings. But, both O’Connell and Tomlin have their teams near or at the top of their respective divisions, even though there were plenty of nay-sayers about their teams going into this season. Tomlin’s Steel Curtain defence isn’t what it was back in the 70s, but it does more than enough to allow Russell Wilson to do just enough for Pittsburgh to win. Meanwhile, O’Connell pushes all the right buttons when it comes to getting retread quarterback Sam Darnold to perform better than he ever has in the C-F-L! They should be the finalists for N-F-L Coach-of-the-Year!!
Last headline…P-G-A board approves card cuts. My reaction…I don’t see anything wrong with slicing the number of full-time playing privileges from 125 to 100 players. The number 125 was a strange one to me in the first place. An event century makes sense – and also means that the competition will be that much fiercer now on a week-to-week basis and some players won’t be able to slide by with hardly playing once they feel they have a cushion! Get out there and do your job!!
