The Prince Albert Police Service is warning the community about a scam that has recently resurfaced.
Officers say the family/grandparent emergency scam involves a potential victim, who is often an older adult, receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be a family member in an emergency and in need of money.
A second fraudster often calls the victim claiming to be an authority figure such as a police officer, lawyer, or doctor.
The callers often as for payment in the form of cash, gift cards, or cryptocurrency. Police say this is a scam and they advise the public to ask important questions of the caller to verify their identity.
You can also hang up and call that family member directly.
If you have been a victim of an emergency scam, you are asked to report the incident online to Prince Albert Police.
