Many charities across the country have been financially impacted by the Canada Post strike. Haven Kids’ House in Saskatoon is one of them.
Dionne Miazdyck-Sheild is the Executive Director with Haven Family Connections. She says every year; Haven Kids’ House utilizes the postal service to remind members of the public to donate.
“We send a mail-out which goes out both electronically and physically in the mail. We haven’t been able to do that this year, so we’ve seen a downturn in giving, only because I think people, when they receive the mail-out, they remember.”
In an effort to raise $350,000 to cover annual operations costs at Haven Kids’ House, the Saskatoon Soaps will be performing at the Broadway Theatre Friday.
“We do get government funding for Haven Kids’ House, but because it’s a 24-hour a day facility, we fundraise the balance of what it costs to operate. That goes towards paying staff, feeding kids, cleaning supplies, all the things we need to keep our place open.”
The Soaps’ live, improvised comedy show titled “Family Christmas Dinner” will take place at 8:00pm. In a news release Saskatoon Soaps describes Friday’s performance as being “filled with food, wine, games, wine, memories, wine, and all your favorite quirky family members. If you think your family is crazy, just wait until you see the Soaps family. Live improvised comedy based on suggestions from the audience. ”
“Their improvised comedy is always really popular in Saskatoon…It’s better to buy tickets early,” she advises. “The Saskatoon Soaps event is timely because we need to make sure we fundraise adequately to be able to pay the expenses throughout the year.”
