An appeal is being filed by the Crown in a case involving the death of nine-year old Baeleigh Maurice in Saskatoon more than three years ago.
The young girl was killed on September 9, 2021 when she was hit by a truck driven by Taylor Kennedy while in a 33rd street crosswalk riding her scooter.
At the crash scene, Kennedy told officers she had vaped marijuana and micro-dosed magic mushrooms on the previous day.
Kennedy was charged on March 15, 2022. Following many delays, the trial’s final arguments took place on August 30, 2024. The defense argued the charge should be stayed because proceedings had gone six months past the ceiling set by the Supreme Court. Last month, a provincial court judge stayed the charge of impaired driving exceeding the prescribed blood-drug concentration of THC, causing death.
On behalf of the family, the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations had urged the Crown to file an appeal.
