Around 6 p.m. Wednesday, Saskatchewan RCMP officers from the North Battleford Crime Reduction Team – Gang Task Force were alerted about a man travelling in the area who had warrants for his arrest for an ongoing Saskatoon Police Service investigation. He was located at a business on Railway Avenue East in North Battleford and while he was inside, RCMP say officers blocked his vehicle to prevent him from getting away, but when he came out the man resisted arrest and then climbed onto the roof of a different vehicle in the parking lot.
The person inside was safely removed. The attempt to get him down began by talking to him, but police report that he was uncooperative, so a 40mm extended range impact round and a conducted energy device were deployed concurrently. He fell and was arrested.
EMS assessed him and transported him to hospital to be evaluated, where he was deemed fit to be released back into RCMP custody and held at the Battlefords Detachment.
Officers searched his vehicle and seized a conducted energy device, a small amount of meth, and evidence of drug trafficking, forged documents and unstamped tobacco.
The charges for 35-year-old Rolfe Herman of La Loch include possession for the purpose of trafficking meth, possession of a prohibited/restricted weapon and resisting/obstructing a peace officer. A second man who was a passenger in the suspect vehicle was arrested at a nearby business. The charges for 42-year-old Clinton Opekokew of Île-à-la-Crosse include possession for the purpose of trafficking meth, identity theft and using, trafficking and/or possessing a forged document. Both make their first appearances in North Battleford Provincial Court on Friday.
