The Saskatchewan RCMP is asking anyone who uses social media-based informal ride sharing services to take precautions.
This comes after a report of a sexual assault this week. The victim says she arranged a ride to Saskatoon through a Facebook group serving the Fort Qu’Appelle area and was sexually assaulted during the ride.
Indian Head RCMP arrested a man in connection to this investigation. He is charged with sexual assault and sexual interference.
The advice from police when looking for a ride to another community through a social media group is to be sure you know and trust the person you are getting a ride from.
Any time you travel, let someone know when you are leaving and when you are expected to arrive.
If you are getting a ride, consider providing information about the vehicle’s make, colour and plate to your contact and if you are negotiating a ride and something feels off, trust your instinct and find an alternative option.
If you have any information about any similar incidents, contact the RCMP.
